PayPal: Tips for Linking Your Account to a Sri Lankan Bank
Yesterday, my smartphone chimed with a push notification from Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC, announcing a new app update that would allow customers to link their PayPal accounts directly to their savings accounts. Since PayPal had officially launched in Sri Lanka just eleven days earlier [Full Story], I was eager to complete the setup with my savings account at the Commercial Bank Kotahena Branch. After a few unsuccessful attempts and several minor technical hurdles, I finally managed to connect my personal PayPal account successfully. The process was not entirely smooth, and I encountered a few confusing issues along the way. Through this post, I hope to share my experience and help others overcome similar obstacles they may face during the setup process.
Note: For a long time, Sri Lankans believed that PayPal services, was responsible for the platform’s limited availability in the country. However, it now appears that the delay was largely due to local banking constraints. Read the full story on the LeN website.
Matching PayPal and Bank Details
When linking your PayPal account to your bank account, your personal details must match exactly on both platforms. This includes your name, date of birth, phone number, and email address. One of the main issues I encountered during the setup process was that the email address registered with my PayPal account differed from the one associated with my bank account. The Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC mobile app only displayed a generic error message stating that the setup could not be completed, without explaining the cause. In contrast, the Sampath Bank PLC Vishwa app clearly identifies which detail is incorrect. If you face similar problems, carefully verify that all personal information in your PayPal profile matches the records maintained by your bank.
Unable to receive the OTP with Dialog
If you are creating a new PayPal account rather than linking an existing one, PayPal requires mobile number verification through an OTP. This could become problematic if the mobile number registered with your bank is a Dialog SIM, as OTP messages from PayPal often fail to reach Dialog numbers. In my case, this issue did not arise because my PayPal account was created several years ago and did not require verification during linking with my bank account. Testing showed that Mobitel numbers successfully receive the OTP without issues. As a result, some users who faced verification failures with Dialog SIMs opted to purchase prepaid Mobitel SIM cards and update their bank records using a KYC form. Although inconvenient, this workaround currently appears to be the most reliable solution.
Update the App to the latest Version
Only three banks in Sri Lanka support PayPal integration, namely Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC, Sampath Bank PLC, and Bank of Ceylon. However, none of these banks currently allows PayPal linking through their web banking platforms. The entire setup process must be carried out using their respective smartphone applications. This means users cannot complete or even initiate PayPal linking via desktop or browser-based banking services. Instead, access through the mobile app is mandatory for successful configuration. Anyone attempting to connect PayPal to a local bank account should therefore ensure they are using the latest version of the relevant banking app before starting the process. Without the mobile application, the PayPal linking feature is not available, and the setup cannot be completed.
Wrap Up
In conclusion, linking PayPal with a local bank account in Sri Lanka is finally possible, but the process is not always straightforward. While Commercial Bank, Sampath Bank, and Bank of Ceylon do support PayPal integration, the setup is limited to their mobile applications and requires careful attention to detail. Even small mismatches in personal information or differences in contact details can result in failed attempts without clear error messages. Mobile number verification may also present challenges depending on the telecom provider, with some networks performing more reliably than others. Despite these hurdles, the connection can be completed with the right preparation and troubleshooting. Understanding the requirements in advance can save time and reduce frustration, making the overall experience much smoother and more efficient for users.
